Bittman: Let’s Reject the Inevitable

Mark Bittman’s opinion piece in today’s New York Times, “Let’s Reject the Inevitable,” hits the nail on the head.

He rails against the vacuum that is government, at a time when functioning government is urgently needed.

He cites Naomi Klein throughout, but I especially like this piece he quoted from her: “Climate change isn’t just a disaster. It’s also our best chance to demand and build a better world.”

In this, he brings together a clear-eyed view of impending catastrophe with the opportunity it offers for serious change. He’s not quite calling for an ecological civilization (or maybe he is!), but in any case I wouldn’t be surprised if that call comes next.
