October 3, 2024
Location: ArtCenter College of Design
Program: 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
CSO Taskforce members and their guests gathered at ArtCenter for a truly unique evening connecting data, science and art. Co-Chair Heidrun Mumper-Drumm welcomed all and explained the Climate Impact Report as well as the Getty-led effort by galleries and museums to set a new benchmark for exhibit sustainability.
Curator Christina Valentine then guided us through Seeing the Unseeable: Data, Design, Art, ArtCenter’s contribution to the 70-plus exhibits that are part of the every-five-years presentation of Getty’s PST ART, the largest art event in the United States.
Instructor Kristine Upesleja shared the latest on sustainable materials in an exploration of ArtCenter’s Colors, Materials, Trends Lab, explaining the importance of developing materials necessary for a sustainable future for the fashion industry, such as beautiful “suede” derived from mushrooms and metallic gold “leather” from pineapples. The hope is for students to take the knowledge they acquire to their future employers to help affect change.
The evening concluded over refreshments and networking. Among the guests were Sheila Steinberg, Director of CSUN’s Institute for Sustainability; Steven Steinberg, LA County’s Geographic Information Officer; Mike Wallace, Persefoni’s Chief Decarbonization Officer; Tom Polansksy, VP Operations and Facilities, The Huntington; Eric Corey Freed, Principal and Sustainability Director of Cannon Design; and Yalmaz Siddiqui, CSO, Disney Company.
