Mount Saint Mary’s University of Los Angeles presents
Mount Meadow
Replacing campus lawn with a dense, native-plant meadow that supports biodiversity and strengthens ecological connections with the nearby Santa Monica Mountains.
This is an ecological restoration microforest project aimed at transforming an underutilized campus lawn into a vibrant native plant meadow. A collaboration between the University and the Malibu Foundation, the initiative addresses the challenges of biodiversity loss and habitat fragmentation by creating a “stepping-stone” habitat that supports pollinators and other native species, helping to connect campus green space with nearby Santa Monica Mountains. Aligned with LA County’s goals for resilient communities and healthy ecosystems, the project uses the Miyawaki method to promote fast-growing, layered native vegetation and a thriving below-ground soil ecosystem. We removed the lawn without herbicides, selected and designed the planting layout, and initiated planting. Next steps include completing the installation and implementing long-term monitoring of soil, plant, and animal life using a three-dimensional approach – below ground, on the ground, and in the air. We hope Mount Meadow becomes a meaningful ecological resource and a peaceful space for students and staff to connect with nature.
