The Mimic Composting System
Waste to soil. Soil to food. Food to community.
The Mimic Composting System is a compact, solar-powered, closed-loop composting solution designed to address two interconnected challenges: the growing volume of food waste sent to landfills and the lack of access to healthy food and environmental resources in underserved communities.
The Mimic converts organic waste into nutrient-dense compost while reusing approximately 95% of its process water — reducing methane emissions and creating a valuable resource for soil restoration, urban agriculture, and local food production. Through a pilot partnership with California State University, Dominguez Hills, the system will process dining hall food waste and generate compost to support community gardens and the AMiA Farm Stand.
Next steps: complete prototype construction, collect operational data on waste diversion and water savings, expand compost distribution, and develop a community food hub that connects local growers, institutions, and residents through a more equitable and sustainable food system.
