The Mimic
Waste to Soil. Soil to Food. Food to Community.

The Mimic Composting System is a compact, solar-powered, closed-loop composting solution designed to address two interconnected challenges: the growing volume of food waste sent to landfills and the lack of access to healthy food and environmental resources in underserved communities. By converting organic waste into nutrient-dense compost while reusing approximately 95% of its process water, the Mimic reduces methane emissions, conserves water, and creates a valuable resource that supports soil restoration, urban agriculture, and local food production. Through a pilot partnership with California State University, Dominguez Hills, the system will process dining hall food waste and generate compost to support community gardens and the AMiA Farm Stand. The next phase includes completing prototype construction, collecting operational data on waste diversion and water savings, expanding compost distribution, and developing a community food hub that connects local growers, institutions, and residents through a more equitable and sustainable food system.
