Occidental College

Occidental College presents
From Lawn to Habitat
This student-initiated project transforms turf lawn into native landscape for education and community engagement.

From Lawn to Habitat transforms the turf lawn at Occidental’s Center for Community Food & Resilience into a thriving native plant garden with water catchment infrastructure.

The project provides a local education and demonstration model for the Turf Replacement Rebate Program of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. The program aims to restore vibrant native landscapes and habitats.

The year’s work culminated with a community education event that was included on the Theodore Payne Native Garden Tour. Students shared their knowledge about native plants with over 700 community members. The team continues to expand upon their work.
