Track 2: Ecological Aesthetics: East and West

Track 7 will consider aesthetic theory as it has developed in East and West and how this has expressed itself the arts. It will particularly examine the differences between Chinese aesthetics and the Western tradition and ask whether Chinese perceptions of the natural world could modify Western anthropocentrism is a beneficial way.

Meijun Fan

Co-Director of the China Project, The Center for Process Studies

Meijun Fan is the co-director of the China Project, Center for Process Studies, Claremont; program director of the Institute for Postmodern Development of China, editor-in-chief of Cultural Communication, a Chinese newspaper, and a professor at the Center for Constructive Postmodernism Studies, Harbin Institute of Technology (China). She completed doctoral studies atBeijing Normal University and master program at Peking University. Her areas of specialty include Chinese traditional aesthetics and aesthetical education. She authored several books and numerous articles. The list includes Aesthetic Development of Children (1990), Beauty in Human Life (1993), Contemporary Interpretation of Chinese Traditional Aesthetic (1997), The Popular Aesthetics in Qing Dynasty (2001), etc.. Her recent publications include Second Enlightenment (with Zhihe Wang, 2011), Toward a Complementary Consciousness and Mutual Flourishing of Chinese and Western Cultures: The Contributions of Process Philosophers (PHILOSOPHY EAST AND WEST VOL. 65, NO. 1 , JANUARY 2015, with Zhihe Wang) and Traditional Chinese View of Plants and Its Relevance (Cambridge Scholars Press, 2014).
